Cape Kri

Michael-aw-kri.jpg (14255 bytes)

One of the favorite dives. This reef is at the Northeast point of Kri Island just 5 min. from the Kri Eco Resort. In the current there are many schools of fish including batfish, barracuda, jacks, batfish and snappers. Watch for mantas, mobula rays, turtles and sharks. There is a giant clam near the top of the reef.

"On my last trip with Papua Diving (former Irian Diving), I recorded 283 fish species during a single dive near the Kri Island resorts. This is the most fishes ever seen on a single dive over a career spanning almost 30 years."

At the corner of this reef at approximately 20m is the place to hang and see the schools sweep by. The current here can be extremely strong and often different kinds of sharks cruise by. Experienced divers can let the current sweep them over the reef into around the corner where it turns into a "Washing machine" pulling divers down to near the bottom at 100ft.

There is also a congregation of fish shallow, near the "Loch Ness Monster", a rock or coral near the top of the reef that is shaped strangely, like the head and neck of a monster. Snappers, barracuda and others often stay near the reef in this area.

Five gigantic Queensland groupers, as big as small cars, are sometimes seen on this dive as are tiny creatures such as the pygmy seahorse, nudibranchs and small reef fish.
