Sardine Reef

Kristian-Cabanis-max-school.jpg (13887 bytes) .

Sardine Reef is one of the best fish dives possible anywhere! A large offshore reef, 4 m. (12 ft.) sloping down to 33 m. (99 ft.) with coral bommies on the slope covered with many species of dendronephya corals, sea fans, many large orange sponges and crinoids. Divers are dropped at the Cape (point) of the reef where large schools of fish congregate in the backwash where the current hits the reef and divides. This is a place where so many fish school together that divers sometimes get the feeling the light is tuned off.

Sardines Reef has a fabulous variety of colorful soft corals and plenty of reef fish every where, but there will be mind blowing many fish in strong current conditions. The sheer number of fish to be seen can be mesmerizing, seemingly endless. Divers can witness the food chain in full swing, with pelagic hunters sweeping close.

There are simply so many fish here at times that you may not be able to see your buddy unless you stay very close together!

Clown triggerfish, Moorish Idols, Parrotfish, Squirrelfish, Anemone fish and others inhabit the area. Some overhangs have dense schools of golden sweepers and sweet lips inside. Large bump head parrotfish feed at the top of the reef and may be approached if divers are stealthy

Photographers like this dive site because the corals coverage is amazing with lange fans and other coral formations. As soon as you have the right composition you only need to wait for seconds to have the fish lined up. A GREAT place for wide angle shots!
